Overlooked Essentials of Employee Well-Being

When it comes to employee well-being, management is often focused on what needs to be added to the workplace, rather than evaluating existing conditions. Before you can even think about what you might want to add to your work environment, you need to think about how you might be able to improve the current conditions.

Two huge areas that are often overlooked when it comes to engaging with your employees and supporting their wellbeing are social support and job control. 

Social Support

A major component of any healthy workplace is ample social support. It’s no secret that positive social relationships are good for our health and having a support system at work is extremely helpful when dealing with workplace challenges and any job-related stress.

Job Control

It’s hard to imagine doing something all day long and having no discretion as to how the job gets done. Employees that have no job control are much more likely to experience feelings of resentment towards their work. If you allow your employees to go about their tasks however it suits them best, as long as you get the results you want in the end, you productivity is likely to increase. When people are in control of their work, there’s a greater sense of pride, and more room for engagement.

Remove Your Hand From The Hot Stove

As you know, your ability to feel pain is very helpful. If you touch a hot stove it’s good to feel pain so you’re alerted to the danger to your body and quickly remove your hand.

Similarly, negative emotions like stress, fear, anger, disappointment, guilt and shame are extremely helpful to alert you that something needs your attention.  But once you have benefited from the alert, it’s harmful for you to stay in those negative emotions.

Staying stressed, afraid, disappointed, guilty, or ashamed makes it harder for you to think clearly or take the most effective action to deal with the problem.

Your sage (positive) mind is much more capable of being creative and insightful or taking calm, clear-headed, decisive action to deal with the challenge that lead to those negative emotions.

So, if you find yourself staying in the negative emotions for more than a second, your saboteurs are keeping your hand on the hot stove and complaining why life is so hard.

How to Avoid Burnout in the Workplace

A strong work ethic should always be celebrated, but when do leaders draw a line to prevent staff from experiencing burnout? Since the answer likely looks different for everyone, the most important things are the availability of resources and communication.

You can’t control everything, but you can: 

·      Try to be flexible if you can when it comes to employees’ working styles.

·      Always try to be open-minded and listen to employee concerns.

·      Try to check in with employees on a predetermined scheduled basis.

·      Make sure all employees are equipped with everything they need to do their job.

How to Increase Employee Engagement with Leadership Vulnerability

The more disconnected your employees feel, the greater risk they run of becoming disengaged. It’s not uncommon for people to keep their struggles to themselves, even at work, for fear of being judged, viewed as incompetent, and for other personal reasons. This can become quite isolating, so it’s important to set a precedent in your workplace that mental health is a top priority. 

Being a good leader is all about setting an example. If you show your employees that it’s okay not to feel 100% great all the time, there’s a good chance it’ll take off some pressure and help them feel more engaged in their work. Instead of being distracted by what they can’t control, they’ll feel more empowered to take control of what is within their grasp.

If you can learn to be vulnerable while keeping it professional, you stand to develop more meaningful relationships at work and give your employees more space to feel comfortable.
