Focus on others

Shifting the focus off of ourselves and onto others can be really gratifying. Thinking about how we can support those around us, be it our loved ones or those within our community can be liberating as well.

We sometimes default to becoming the centre of our own universe – wrapped up in our own troubles. When we become involved with others, we become part of something that is greater than our individual self.

What are some ways you can step outside of yourself this week and offer a meaningful connection to others who may need it?

Social distancing requires creativity for this task. Drop your ideas in the comments!

Finding Meaning in Uncertain Times

Podcast Host, Cathy Heller, is often quoted for saying: “The opposite of depression isn’t being happy, it’s finding a purpose.”

How does one determine their purpose while living in such uncertain times? How do we navigate living meaningful lives when we don’t know what lies ahead of us on the journey?

When you explore your values, determine your strengths, discover your passions and find a way to channel the cumulative effect of those three things into a service, that is the place where you find your purpose.

The sense of meaning you find there can guide you even when you don’t know what lies ahead because the answer to the question ‘why’ becomes more relevant than the answer to the question ‘how’.

As a personal coach, I am here to offer further guidance to you in discovering your purpose. Please reach out by sending me a message!

How resilient are you dealing with life’s curve balls?

I think of myself as a pretty resilient person. For me, resiliency is my capacity to cope with life’s curve balls.

Well, with what we are all currently living through, we have been thrown a BIG curve ball. (OK the pitching machine has not been turned off.?)

So, I am thinking about resilience. How are you managing the challenges, loss, and disappointments during these very trying times?

I thought it would be a great time to revisit an article I wrote last September about tips to help us be more resilient.

Please let me know what you are doing to manage this big curve ball.

  1. You’re at a point in your life where you have an equal balance of both experience and possibility.

  3. This is the only life you get – loving it and taking pride in what you do is what you deserve.

How to Transcend Crisis-Mode With Positive Self-Talk

Do you find you’re inside of your brain a lot during these trying times? Fears can create negative-self talk and that very quickly becomes a downward spiral that won’t take you anywhere helpful.

When fears start creeping in and you find your mind being overcome with doom-and-gloom, it’s time to take back the reins!

Start by naming the emotion. What do you feel? Is it fear, anxiety, or panic? Do you feel like crying?

Next, place it. Where do you feel it in your body? Get really specific in observing the physical sensation.

Notice your surroundings. What do you see around you? Feel your feet on the ground. What are you connected to?

Once you are present and grounded think about the thought that started your spiral. Now think of how you can reframe it toward the positive. For example if you have the thought: ‘I’m going to get sick’ — reframe it by saying to yourself, ‘I am going to do everything in my power to stay healthy’.

Choose your thoughts by backtracking and reframing them for positive self-talk that will feed a healthy mindset!

5 Tips for Staying Grounded in Uncertain Times

Being thrust, so suddenly, into a global pandemic, can bring up a lot of feelings. Like anxiety, loneliness, and feeling powerless. When circumstances are beyond our control, it is important to give our attention to the things we CAN control.

Here are 5 things you can control that will support your wellness:

  • Eat Healthy – Get your vitamins and minerals by eating fresh fruits and vegetables!
  • Sleep Well – Create a supportive bedtime routine and try to go into ‘rest and relaxation mode’ at the same time every night. Try meditation or sleepy-time herbs if you have trouble quieting your mind for sleep.
  • Exercise – Getting your blood moving and your heart pumping is not just beneficial to your physical health, it does wonders for your mental health too!
  • Drink Water – Staying hydrated is especially important during stressful times.
  • Nature – Find ways of connecting with nature! Go for a walk, be in the sunshine at a park, or find places near your community in the wild to be by a river or in a forest. It is so grounding to connect with the earth.

Other things that can feel supportive if you are spiraling from lack of control could be learning a mindfulness or breathwork practice, listening to uplifting music, spending quality time with family members, or choosing a project that you feel inspired to start.

While it is important to be up-to-date on advice from medical experts, reducing your exposure to news and social media could also help you stay focused in the present moment, and grounded in your intuition.

To go deeper into the work of staying grounded or if you need any additional support, send me a private message and I’d be happy to help.
